[33]***A showcase for the A500 produced as a conversion of the Atari ST title. Showed off the console's excellent graphics and sound capabilities.

One of my first games ever. Great graphics. Free england, talk to Robin the Hood, rescue beautiful maiden, take part in tournements, be king! Has also little RPG elements and... ah, a little of everything.

Cinemaware went and released most versions of this game for free download. Specifically the "CD32/CDTV" version. But not the Amiga 500 version.

FOR THE FEDERATED WORLD’S SPECIAL FORCES

Moving my squad through enemy infested jungle. Suddenly Darrow’s detector picks up life forms 50 metres out.

"Nothing but a couple of BRACHIATORS" he says to me.

Just then Darrow takes it through the chest. We all hit the dirt trying to figure where the shot came from. And there it is... a BATTLE ROBOT. Hsiang shoots its sensory grid but it doesn’t do much good. It starts tracking him with its dual guns and suddenly he takes some hot plasma. Now it’s just me and the Kid Roki.

"Roki" I said, "Direct fire at its lifters so it can’t move." So like a vet of 20 drops he rises on one knee and hits the thing right in the lifters.

"That’s one less Battle Robot", he says.

I toss an energy grenade at the hulk to make sure. Then we turned to start the long job of carrying the boys north to our landing craft.

Chess author1987Originally released in source code form to the old USENET group net.sources.games simply as "Chess", this C language implementation of a chess game has subsequently been christened as SCP, or Stanback Chess Program, after its author John Stanback. Even though the source code is short, it plays a competent game, but lacks any kind of graphics due to being written in portable C code. The chess board is displayed as a grid of text characters, with letters representing the different pieces and an asterisk marking the black pieces. Moves are entered in classical chess notation, so that "E2E3" moves the king's pawn forward one square. Other text commands are used to load and save games, flip the board, list moves or get hints.

Due to its open source nature, SCP has been integrated in many other games, most notably forming the core of GNU Chess from version 2 and until version 5.

Battle Chess Electronic Arts (Interplay)1988It took 2,000 years for someone to make chess better.

"Battle Chess is the next step beyond all existing chess programs." -Video Games & Computer Entertainment

The most challenging game on earth comes to life in Battle Chess. An entire medieval world at war is reflected on the checkered field.

Everyone who's ever had a knight take a pawn has seen that capture as more than one piece replacing another on the board. In players' minds, the bold knight, resplendent in his armor of silver or ebon, sallies forth and slays the foul footsoldier. Combat, mortal combat, is the heart and soul of chess, but this aspect of it can only live in the mind's eye ... until now!

Lots of computer chess games capture the basics of chess. Only Battle Chess brings chess to life by combining a magnificent chess logic system with colorful, humorous, and dramatic three-dimensional animations.

"Battle Chess must rank as the most entertaining chess game around, and the funniest." -The Games Machine *** Advanced, state-of-the-art 3D animation and digitized sound effects * Over 4 megabytes of animation * Winner of the Best Graphics Achievement In A Non-Graphics Product award from the Software Publishers Association * Play against the computer or your friends, or let the computer play against itself * Modem capability for long distance games (not available on the C-64) * 10 levels of play challenge even the most sophisticated player * Opening library of 30,000 moves (not available on the Apple or C-64) * A wonderful way to teach children to play chess"Every chess player will want a copy of this program. Highly recommended." -Computer Gaming World***

GERMAN TANKS since dawn have been thrusting into allied lines at points over a 60-mile front from the River Roer to Luxembourg. They are throwing in a fresh division of infantry, and these men, with the tanks, have overrun a number of villages and made several wedges on the Belgian-German and Luxembourg German borders. The Germans are pressing forward fanatically with an order of the day from von Rundstedt saying: "Now is the time for the German Army to strike. Give your all in one last effort. Everything is at stake" * Realistic sound effects * One or two players/Save Game function * German Saboteurs/Siegfried Line * Artillery Supply/Terrain effects * V-2 Rocket attacks***

Chess 2.0 author1989Chess 2.0 is an updated Amiga port of the Stanback Chess Program. In contrast to the 1.0 port, this version has a fully mouse-driven graphical interface, while retaining the original SCP chess engine. Each game starts with setting the chess timer. Since the computer uses all the time alloted to calculate as many moves as possible, fast players are usually favoured over slow-thinking ones. Games can be saved and loaded, the board can be flipped and players can change sides. The colours of the board and pieces may be changed, and there is online help. The program may give hints, there is an "undo" function and the board may be manipulated, removing or adding pieces. The list of moves may be saved to disk or viewed on-screen, and there is a bank of game openings supplied. labelimagesubject
Chess Player 2150 Oxford Softworks1989Chess Player 2150 is a chess program which played well against the other chess programs of the day and won the 1989 British Open Personal Computer Chess Championship (according to a post in ST Report International Online Magazine, November 13, 1992, No.8.45). The author was not shy about his program's prowess. Built into the program is a pull-down menu, giving it's performance against Chessmaster 2000, Chessmaster 2100 and Colossus X, in 10 games apiece.

The game was designed to improve as it played, so over time a game that played against good players would be much better than when it first began. Users have the option of saving, so that the gained intelligence isn't lost.

Although the author clearly wanted the game to be used by serious chess players, he included whimsical chess pieces as well. One set includes farm animals (sheep pawns, dog rooks, horse knights, chicken bishops, cow queens, and pig kings); another setting includes Science-Fiction pieces that look like aliens. The game can be played in 2D or 3D, and includes digitised speech on the Amiga version.***

Colossus Chess X CDS Software1989Colossus Chess X is the first 16-bit adaptation of the chess games series by Martin P. Bryant.

This fully-fledged program understands all the rules of chess, including underpromotion, the fifty move rule and draws by repetition; it can achieve the king-bishop-knight mate. The new features are a modifiable opening book of 11000 moves, the program also learns new lines of play from playing experience. You can also play against the clock, try a blindfold mode or use the program to solve mating problems.

Apart from the standard 2D board there's a 3D one, which can be freely rotated. Four graphical chess piece sets are available, as well as music & speech, and a demonstration mode.***

Breach 2 Impressions (Omnitrend Software)1990An early squad-level tactical combat game, much like the X-Com series of games and the more contemporary Laser Squad. Breach 2 features turn-based combat from an isometric point of view set in the far future. As one of the more unique aspects the squad leaders gain experience from successful missions should they survive.

Breach 2 is set in the same sci-fi universe as Omnitrend's Universe and Rules of Engagement series and shares the same backstory with those games. Breach 2 is a part of the IGS (Interlocking Game System) and compatible with the two Rules of Engagement games. This means you can use Breach 2 to resolve the tactical combat situations, boarding an enemy ship for example, you run into in the starship command simulation, which is the heart and soul of the Rules of Engagement series.

A scenario builder is included with the game, making it possible to create your own missions and trade them.***

Chess Champion 2175  CP Software;Interplay (Oxford Softworks)1990Checkmate (or Chess Champion 2175) is the successor of Chess Player 2150. Most basic options and displaying are the same like in the predecessor. Improvements are done in the strength of the chess engine (the authors claim over 2000 ELO for the program), the usage of extra RAM for additional deep searching, a bigger opening library, the possibility to extend the opening library by the user and some improvements to the user interface.

Otherwise this is a traditional full-featured chess game with all of the standard chess features. Difficulty is chosen by selecting one of four levels and then assigning a time limit for the computer to choose a move. The idea is to allow infinite degrees of difficulty. The board is rendered in 3D, and the player is able to rotate the board through any angle.

The game offers options to rate the approximately ELO rating of the player by showing different board situations and judging the user's solutions. This can also be used to judge the ranking of the program. During play, the program can give you tips, you can change the sides or force the computer to stop thinking and take the best move found until then.***

Chess Simulator Infogrames (Oxford Softworks)1990Chess Simulator is a chess game which offers the standard features: playing chess against the AI which can be set in a number of different levels suited for beginners and advanced players (the maximum ELO rating is 2150); optionally with an advice option which tries to teach chess to the player. Graphical features include a number of different pieces and the option to change the angle and zoom of the 3D playfield. Of course it is also possible to use a top-down perspective. The game also provides a way to calculate the user's ELO score: the program presents 24 situations and the player must provide likely moves within two minutes.***

Celtic Legends Ubi Soft1991Eskel and Sogrom are the greatest magicians in the land, and both are hungry for power. The long war between them is beginning to enter Endgame, in the Rochebrume cluster of 23 islands, each with their own special range of magic on offer.

The game is highly strategic, with icon-based controls and a turn-based structure similar to Battle Isle. You will need to destroy the rival wizard's forces on each island. It's important to hold as many castles as possible, so as to generate the maximum amount of magic. Magic is used to move and create your forces, and to weaken your opposition.***
